Basic Information

Appearance

Delana is a somewhat stout woman of around 5’6” (~168 cm) with an ample bosom, she was unusually graceful for a woman of her size. She had pale, nearly white-blond hair and watery blue eyes. She had an intense stare and an oddly melodious, deep, yet feminine voice. She had the typical ageless face of an Aes Sedai who had worn the Shawl for many years.

Appearance

Personality

Personality

Delana was considered a good negotiator, partially due to her rather disconcerting way of looking at people as though nothing else existed, making some individuals uncomfortable enough to agree to her terms just to escape her gaze. She had little patience, especially with Novices or Accepted who tended to dislike her because she expected near perfection in tasks she assigned and was rarely satisfied with the work, she tended to express her frustration through sighs rather than sharp speech which likely came across as condescending. Delana often came across as unpredictable to other Aes Sedai due to her vocal opinions and inconsistent support for various Aes Sedai factions.

Actions During the Story

Actions Before the Story

Actions Before the Story

Delana was born in Shienar in 950 NE and went to the White Tower at age 18 in 968 NE where she was a Novice for five years.  She became close friends with Siuan Sanche, who arrived in the Tower in 972 NE and the pair committed many pranks together, Siuan often acting as a protector and taking the blame if they were caught.  Delana was jealous of Moiraine Damodred, who was also a Novice at the time and was Siuan’s closest friend.  Delana passed her test for the Ring in 973 NE and became one of the Accepted and spent the next five years working toward the Shawl.  Delana earned the Shawl and chose the Gray Ajah in 978 NE, likely just before the events of New Spring as she is not mentioned as one of the Accepted in the book.  Given her close friendship with Siuan when the pair were in training it seems likely that Delana had become Aes Sedai by this time and the two could not maintain their friendship until after Siuan was Raised.

Fires of Heaven

Delana is never mentioned in the book but would have been in Salidar by the time the Rebels began creating a Rebel Hall of the Tower.  She arrived around the same time as Janya Frende, Sitter for the Brown Ajah, as the two women shared a house in Salidar and these arrangements were assigned based on when women arrived.

Lord of Chaos

Delana has been elected as a Sitter for the Gray in Salidar.  She is first mentioned by Nynaeve who is assigned to copy notes for the Aes Sedai, Elayne warns Nynaeve to be very careful with her copying as Delana hates blotches or mistakes and will make her redo the copying should she find any.    When Nynaeve arrives late for her tasks Delana, along with Janya, begins to question Nynaeve about Rand al’Thor.  Delana makes Nynaeve extremely uncomfortable due to her stare and frequent sighs and comments highlighting Nynaeve’s repetitive answers.  Eventually, the two Sitters send Nynaeve away.

Delana, who is with Yellow Sitter Romanda Cassin, meets with Sheriam Bayanar when Elayne informs Sheriam that Nynaeve has Healed Logain of Gentling.  She accompanies the other Aes Sedai to see for herself if this is true.  After Nynaeve goes on to Heal Siuan and Leane Sharif of Stilling Delana along with Lelaine Akashi, Sitter of the Blue Ajah embraces Siuan and warmly welcomes her back to the Aes Sedai sisterhood.  Siuan noted Delana had been her closest friend aside from Moiraine and that they had been Novices and Accepted together.  Once realizing that Siuan’s strength has been greatly reduced Delana recalls that Siuan had always taken the lead and protected Delana in their youth and now that the tables had turned Delana is determined to act as a protector for Siuan.

Shortly after Siuan leaves Delana a Novice named Lucilde brings Halima Saranov into Delana’s presence and informs Delana that Halima has claimed friendship with Delana.  Not recognizing the woman Delana is shocked to receive a secret Black Ajah signal, holding her hands at her sides, but with thumbs thrust hard between the first two fingers.  This comes from a woman who cannot even channel surprises but also angers Delana who demands to know who Halima thinks she is and how she learned such a signal and coldly tells her no darkfriend is the equal of Aes Sedai.  Halima quickly disabuses Delana of any pretensions, telling the Aes Sedai that Cabriana Mecandes, now dead, had informed her of Salidar and that Delana would be charged to co-opt the Rebel Hall toward Halima’s plans now.  When Halima tells Delana her true name is Aran’gar Delana recognizes the name from information given to her in her dreams and is truly afraid for the first time in years, recognizing she is now working directly for one of the Forsaken.

Delana is the first Sitter to stand both times for Egwene al’Vere to be Raised as the Rebel Amyrlin Seat.  Egwene notes that Delana is one of the younger Sitters when the women line up by age to kiss her ring after the ceremony.  Later Delana, who is attempting to support Sheriam, Romanda, and Lelaine’s opposing factions in the Hall, is given further instructions by Halima to press to have Logain Gentled once again but she does not understand what could make the woman fear a man who can channel and who is shielded and under constant guard.  Delana wants to kill Aran'gar but is certain if she tried, she would be the one to die, or more likely to suffer a severe punishment so she meekly complies with her orders.  When Mat Cauthon arrives in Salidar, Delana attempts to bully him into accepting a Warder Bond, which he declines.

A Crown of Swords

Delana continues to attempt to support all three factions within the Rebellion, starting out she is somewhat effective in her endeavors but quickly starts to be simply erratic by the other Sitters as well as Egwene, even when they expect her support.  Delana is planning on laying a proposal to the Hall to openly claim Elaida do Avriny a’Roihan, the Tower Amyrlin Seat is a member of the Black Ajah.  Egwene, Lelaine, and Romanda all find this frustrating once the Sitter actually sends the proposal without having it Sealed to the Hall.

Path of Daggers

Delana brings Halima as an escort when the Hall, Egwene, and the Salidar Six go to meet a group of Andoran and Murandian nobles who have come to stop the Rebel Army from entering Andor and is later seen talking to the other woman and being upset about something and needing comforting from Halima.  Delana stands for Egwene’s proposal on the Declaration of War against Elaida but promptly vomits when Brown Ajah Sitter Takima Deraighdin explains the powers given to the Amyrlin to pursue the war.

Delana approaches Egwene to give her several warnings, first asking if Egwene planned on Bonding a Warder, specifically Gareth Bryne.  Second, she warns Egwene to be wary of who to support in the Hall as many Sitters do not see things eye to eye and that Egwene’s powers with the war may well upset the balance if she offends one of them.  And lastly, her true goal was to warn Egwene to ask Sitters about rumors around negotiations with the Tower that some wish to pursue.  Egwene has Delana inform the Salidar Six about these discussions, outraging the council with the exception of Gray Ajah Sister Beonin Marinye who asks Egwene for permission to participate, Delana snaps at Beonin that the Gray not only negotiate, but also judge and that Elaida had been judged.  However, Egwene grants Beonin permission to pursue negotiations with the Tower Sitters but tells the woman the only terms she would accept must include Elaida resigning and going into exile.  Delana leaves the group, who immediately begins discussing what her true goal with this information was aimed at, her clear inconsistency in which faction she supported making her motivations a mystery to them all.  Siuan warns Egwene to be more careful around Halima and tells her about information that Halima has been heard screaming at Delana and the woman’s temper was not as mild as she presented to Egwene.

Delana is present when Akarrin Comeris and her group report on their findings from the site of what had once been Shadar Logoth.  The group informed the Hall that massive amounts of saidar had been used, but the resonance of saidin dwarfed what had been done with saidar at the site.  Moria proposes an alliance with the Black Tower to give the Aes Sedai access to male channelers in order to expand circles beyond thirteen women to attempt to combat what they assume was the Forsaken.  Despite looking like she might become ill Delana stands to support the proposal, but is clearly unsure of her decision.

After Egwene’s capture by the Tower Delana joins a session of the Hall after being seen being browbeaten by Halima, Romanda assumes the women are pillow-friends and thinks Delana is a fool for allowing the other woman to lead in the relationship.  In the Hall Merise Haindehl along with her Asha’man Warder Jahar Narishma tell the Sitters of the Cleansing of saidin and offer to allow Aes Sedai aligned with Egwene to Bond up to 47 Soldiers or Dedicated within the Black Tower as recompense for the Bonding of Aes Sedai.  When Narishma tells of a woman wielding saidin and killing Eben Hopwill, Delana leaves the meeting and vanishes.  Romanda realizes Halima, who claimed to have been friends with Cabriana, is the only connection between Anaiya Carel and Kairen Stang, Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah who had been mysteriously murdered using saidin and calls for the arrest of Delana and Halima, but they have escaped.

In tel’aran’rhiod, Siuan informs Egwene that Delana and Halima were responsible for the murders of Anaiya and Kairen and that the two had fled the camp.  Egwene is repelled that one of the Forsaken had so easily infiltrated the Aes Sedai.  Egwene later finds Delana’s name on Verin Mathwin’s list of Aes Sedai she has identified as Black Ajah.  Egwene notes the Grays have already replaced Delana with a new Sitter, Naorisa Cambral.

Delana is last seen with Aran’gar and Graendal at Natrin’s Barrow, now completely obedient to Aran’gar and serving as little more than a sex slave to the Forsaken.  She is commanded by Graendal to place Compulsion weaves on Rand’s agent, Piqor Ramshalan, making the man forget their meeting and instead believe he had secured an important alliance with a merchant family as well as anything else Delana could think of at random.  Graendal also has Aran’gar placing random Compulsion on the man.  As Rand moves in on Natrin’s Barrow Graendal places shields on both Delana and Aran’gar and leaps through a gateway just as a massive blast of balefire destroys her palace along with the other two women, hundreds of Graendal’s slaves, and dozens of items of the Power.

Character Summaries

Special Abilities

Special Abilities

Delana is in the higher tiers of Aes Sedai Strength at level 18 (6) and would be considered a relatively strong modern channeler, she would have been in the top 75-100 women within the White Tower hierarchy at the start of the series.  Her strength in the Power is likely one reason she was selected by the Gray Ajah in Salidar to be a Sitter, despite her very young age.  She stands high enough in the hierarchy to be able to influence other Sisters, within the Gray Ajah only six women: Yukiri (level 14), Beonin (level 16), Kwamesa (level 16), Temaile as well as Meidani and Merana each at level 17 are confirmed to stand above Delana. Within the Black Ajah Delana was among the top 20 strongest known women.  Delana would also be considered a very skilled modern channeler as a fully trained Aes Sedai; she would be proficient with all of the standard Aes Sedai weaves to some degree.  Delana had some additional training as a member of the Black Ajah and had learned the weaves for Compulsion which she used just prior to her death.  She was strong enough to create gateways for Traveling, but any other skills or Talents she may have possessed with the One Power are unknown.

Notable Possessions

Notable Possessions

Delana is never associated with any objects of the Power nor does she have mundane/political power outside of her position as a Sitter in the Hall of the rebel Aes Sedai.  Delana had no Warders.

Legacy

Legacy

Delana is dead prior to the Last Battle but will be renounced as a known member of the Black Ajah whose fate is unknown to those who remain living after Tarmon Gai’don.  Delana had been a relatively important woman to the rebel Aes Sedai as a Sitter for her Ajah, but she as one of the too-young Sitters she was most likely in the position due to influence from Varilin Zanaire who had been sent to join the rebels by Gray Ajah Head Clerk Serancha Colvine in an attempt to soothe the rebellion before it truly began.

Delana was never stated to be a high-ranking member of the Black Ajah, but her association with the Forsaken Balthamel/Aran’gar placed her in an important role for the Shadow.  Delana voted for several key initiatives based on Aran’gar’s orders, including Raising Egwene to Amyrlin Seat, declaring war on Elaida, and agreeing to an alliance with the Black Tower.  Ultimately each of these votes was aimed at prolonging the White Tower Schism in order to keep the Aes Sedai from being focused on the Last Battle.

On the surface, Delana appeared to be a near picture-perfect Aes Sedai; calm, confident, and able to spin the truth on its head. Not even other Sisters were able to detect her true motivations even though her political acumen was quickly brought into question once she began following the orders of Aran’gar to support all factions within the rebel Hall.  Along with Sheriam Bayanar, Delana was well placed as a close friend of Siuan Sanche prior to the Schism and despite true feelings of friendship, it is likely that she reported on her knowledge of the one-time Amyrlin. Delana behaves like any other Aes Sedai, putting the Tower as an institution above all other priorities, except for those of the Black Ajah.

Like most Black Sisters Delana still displays many personality traits of her public Ajah and is seen as a typical Gray by those around her.  This makes her an example of how the Black Ajah was able to easily infiltrate the White Tower and undermine the organization.

In Other Media

No announcement regarding Delana’s character has been made for the upcoming Wheel of Time TV series being produced by Amazon Studios.  It is unlikely the character will make an appearance in earlier seasons given her timeline in the books, although producers could also choose to expand the character or combine her role with another member of the Black Ajah to simplify the TV adaptation.
